Equilibrium Shape of Crystals

چکیده

This chapter discusses the equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) from a physical perspective, beginning with a historical introduction to the Wulff theorem. It takes advantage of excellent prior reviews, particularly in the late 1980s, recapping highlights from them. It contains many ideas and experiments subsequent to those reviews. Alternatives to Wulff constructions are presented. Controversies about the critical behavior near smooth edges on the ECS are recounted, including the eventual resolution. Particular attention is devoted to the origin of sharp edges on the ECS, to the impact of reconstructed or adsorbed surface phases coexisting with unadorned phases, and to the role and nature of possible attractive step-step interactions.

Equilibrium shape of 4He crystal under zero gravity below 200 mK

Equilibrium crystal shape is the lowest energy crystal shape that is hardly realized in ordinary crystals because of their slow relaxation. (4)He quantum crystals in a superfluid have been expected as unique exceptions that grow extremely fast at very low temperatures. However, on the ground, gravity considerably deforms the crystals and conceals the equilibrium crystal shape, and thus, gravity...

Experimental Study on the Magnetomechanical Characteristics of Ni-Mn-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Single Crystals

Magnetic shape memory properties of Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals were characterized by measurement of stress-induced martensite reorientation under constant magnetic fields. Also magnetic field-induced strain as a function of the applied magnetic field under different constant compressive stress levels has been investigated. All the experiments were performed at room temperature in which the sample...

Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals

The problem of finding the equilibrium shape of a small particle by the Wulff construction is reviewed briefly, with emphasis on its applications to liquid crystals. The proof of Wulff’s theorem is stated in a concise mathematical form. Some typical equilibrium shapes of liquid crystalline cirops are described. When there is orientational order of the molecules in the liquid crystal but no tran...

Equilibrium crystal shape of Bi - saturated Cu crystals at 1223 K

The equilibrium crystal shape of Bi-saturated Cu at 1223 K has been studied, after quenching the material to room temperature, by a scanning electron microscopy investigation of the shapes of pores (or negative crystals) that are present on grain boundary fracture surfaces. Bi-saturation of Cu surfaces at 1223 K results in dramatic changes in the ECS compared to pure Cu. Whereas all possible su...

Shape-controlled orientation and assembly of colloids with sharp edges in nematic liquid crystals.

The assembly of colloids in nematic liquid crystals via topological defects has been extensively studied for spherical particles, and investigations of other colloid shapes have revealed a wide array of new assembly behaviors. We show, using Landau-de Gennes numerical modeling, that nematic defect configurations and colloidal assembly can be strongly influenced by fine details of colloid shape,...
